Williams -- Recent Paintings August 31 -- September 30, 2005 I've been bored by my own habits as an artist and always struggle to find new ways of working that take my habitual behavior out of the making process. Griff Williams The Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of recent paintings by Griff Williams opening Wednesday, August 31, 2005. In the past Griff has started with a single form and color palette that then transformed itself into a rich conclusion of repetition in color and shape. The recent work of Williams is a unique interpretation of the illusion of elements found in abstract painting, a replacement of the forms used in his previous body of work. In each painting a disruptive pattern is present and serves as a model of compositional form throughout. Gestalt psychology has intrigued Williams' creativity with how we as humans have the ability to "see or prevent something from being seen". Camouflage is a prime example of this idea of blending into surroundings and has provided Williams with a concrete example of this theory. The combination of images chosen from the illustrations of HMS Beagle expeditions and Charles Darwin's notebooks blend together to create their own version of camouflage.
