Our Garden is a feature length documentary I’m producing. It is about how art is made outside the market centers, its effect on the culture of an area, and why it should matter to all of us. The film chronicles artists living and working in the Bay Area and considers the reality of following a path that is less careerist and more community driven.
Through interviews and archival footage, the film explores why artists, musicians, writers choose to call this area their home and what it means to create a life in the arts. Our art institutions frequently focus on an outward looking, Internationalist view of the art world. All the while, every other aspect of our lives here in the Bay Area seem to support a regionalist ethic. We covet locality, farm-to-table artisanal trends, yet in the art community we defer to other regions to define value. This film celebrates an intertwined art community that has flown just below the radar, but influenced generations.
